I first had the pleasure of meeting Penny Stallings in March of 2015. I had recently accepted a position of an Office Manager for a dealership, and due to unfortunate circumstances, the gentleman who was to train me passed away very unexpectedly after only four days of working with me. I had never worked in a dealership before. The owner of the dealership hired Penny to come in and work with me for two weeks. From the moment I picked her up at the airport until we were finished with my training, I knew I had more than just a trainer by my side. Penny is an inspiration. She is knowledgeable, gifted, intelligent, and by far one of the most giving people I have ever known. She has an eye for detail, she is very driven and goal oriented. Prior to meeting Penny and having her come work with me, I was pretty sure I was not going to keep my position as Office Manager for this dealership. I did not have the experience that was required to work for a dealership even with an accounting background. Penny gave me the confidence I needed to know that dealership world was in fact exactly where I belonged. She was always calm, she was always focused, and she showed me exactly what it takes to become a great Office Manager for a dealership. To this day, I can call Penny with any questions I have. Her services don't end because her time at the dealership ends. While I have no illusion that 3 years later, I am still learning, and will always be learning, I know without a doubt that I would not have the confidence and passion for my job that I have today if it were not for my time with Penny. To this day, I still have the original email Penny sent me when we completed my in-house training, and to this day, I still read it to keep me grounded and focused. She is by far one of the greatest asset a dealership could possibly utilize.

The accounting department/office is the one area in the store where most Dealer Principals and GMs have had very limited exposure as they’ve ascended through the various ranks in the organization. Many DPs and GMs have a good handle of what it takes to be successful in the variable and/or fixed ops departments of the dealership. When it comes to actually following the flow of money through the dealership, however, most of us can find ourselves talked into an accounting circle with the mere mention of debits and credits. In today’s world it has become easier and easier to transfer and shuffle funds with little-to-no paper trail. It seems like at least once a month you read an article about a dealer who found some employees embezzling money from their store. This is just one of the many reasons why it is important you have an independent 3rd party review your daily accounting practices on a regular basis.
